Growing recognition of the importance of global
education, partnerships, international networks, and creative ways of using new technologies to
encourage these were themes that emerged at an international conference of community colleges in
England, July 13-15, 1998. Community Colleges: The Global Economy's Investment Banks was hosted by
Bilston Community College of the United Kingdom and cosponsored by the International Association for
Education, Training, and Work in the United Kingdom; the Community Colleges Association of South
Africa; the American Council on International and Intercultural
Education; and the Stanley Foundation from the US.
Representatives from the United Kingdom, the US, South Africa, Poland, Romania, Russia, Denmark,
India, the Netherlands, and the European Commission attended. Topics discussed included global
competence, institutional networks and frameworks, and welfare to work: inclusive learning and
employability.
